Often known as Mr. Relliable, Steve Waugh is now well regarded as one of Australia’s all time best captains. Since Mark Taylor’s departure from the game in early 1999 Steve Waugh has led the Aussies from triumph to triumph. With a world cup victory under his belt and a record sixteen consecutive test wins it is no wonder that he now has a DVD out in his honour.

The disc, titled simply ‘Steve Waugh’, is basically just a two hour documentary of Steve Waugh’s career as it stood shortly after the Australian’s world cup victory in 1999. Being comprised mainly of live footage, interviews and behind the scenes snippets, this movie is a reasonably interesting watch even though it feels more like a fill in recording used by Channel 9 during washed out matches. Some parts of the interviews are quite interesting, and the old footage is good for a trip down memory lane, but if your not a big cricket fan then this one may seem to drag on a bit. For Steve Waugh enthusiasts this disc will be quite pleasant and interesting to watch, but overall it is still nothing more then a television special.

The audio and video are generally as you’d expect for a disc like this. The video is presented with an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and is not widescreen enhanced. The interviews with Steve himself are reasonably recent, filmed shortly after the world cup. They look quite crisp and clean without any major flaws. Some of the footage dates back over ten years and varies accordingly. The older footage suffers from grain and isn’t terribly clean or sharp, most likely due to the source material.

The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 and is about as good as one could expect for a presentation that looks like it was designed for television. Being only of interviews and live footage this is all that is required with the dialogue being clear and easy to hear without any sync problems.

The only extras on this disc are a collection of previews for other sporting discs brought to us by the Visual Entertainment Group. Yet again, these are nothing more the television advertisements wacked onto the disc in an effort to sell more copies. Perhaps some statistics or a photo gallery of Steve’s work would have been a nice addition, but unfortunately we see nothing of such sort.

"An interesting inside view on one of Australia's cricketing legends with a transfer that is about as good as it gets for a television special."
