Rachel Schmied
(rachel@dvd.net.au)
  1. Describe your age.
I’m old. Gravity is just about to turn mean on me. To clarify, in eight years, I’ll be three times the age I was fourteen years ago.

  2. Where were you five years ago?
Packing my bags for London city, footloose and fancy free.

  3. Where do you see yourself five years from now?
Travelling the world with a laptop and permanent suntan. It will be mine. Oh, yes. It will be mine.

  4. What's a good night's entertainment for you and your friends?
It usually involves disturbing quantities of wine. You’re too young to hear about the rest.

  5. What got you into DVD and how long ago?
A fellow reviewer and his 200+ collection was my first taste of the possibilities presented by an obsessive-compulsive involvement with them.

  6. What do you love about DVD?
I can see my reflection on the back of them. Oh, and the fact that I can skip the boring hobbit village. Aragorn, Aragorn, Aragorn. You’re too young to hear about the rest.

  7. Given the advances in DVD over the past few years, does the format still surprise you and why?
Yup… it’s one of those things where the only limit is the imagination (as per my Aragorn plastic figurine). The different things film makers and animation boffins come up with is a constant source of entertainment for me (as is my Aragorn plastic figurine).

  8. What title in your collection do you use to introduce friends and family to DVD and why?
Three guesses (and eleven Oscars in 2004). My parents have met him, and approved.

  9. Outside of DVD, what keeps you entertained?
Watching homies in kappa link pinkies in the mall, under the guise of ethnography.

  10. Have you ever met someone famous before and/or wish to meet someone famous?
You may or may not believe this one. I’ll take that chance. When I worked in an Astrology shop in Covent Garden, London, Billy Zane bought a Yearly Forecast from me. I didn’t recognise him. BTW he’s a Pisces. And he’s absolutely gorgeous in the flesh. Sorry, Aragorn. I can look! I swear I didn't touch!

  11. What is your current method of transport and what would you like to upgrade to?
A short skirt and a flick of the hair tends to get me lifts to most places – my (free) car doesn’t know how to move yet, so I’m hitching lifts all over town. When this method (rarely) fails, Stycle, my trusty two wheeled steed gets a ring in.

  12. What is your favorite recipe/meal/take-away?
I make the meanest roast. Tons of garlic. Very grrr. Unfortunately, as a student, the usual fare is two minute noodles and toast with vegemite. I don’t really dig takeaway, but I’ll murder a pizza on a hangover.

  13. What is the only joke you seem to remember when people around you are telling jokes?
    Ahh this one’s easy.
    Q. What do you call a deer with no eyes?
    A. No idea (get it? No eyed deer?!)
    Q. What do you call a deer with no eyes and no legs?
    A. Still no idea (I’m not going to spell it out for you this time).
    Q. What do you call a deer with no eyes, no legs and no genetalia?
    A. Still no f**king idea!!!
Sorry, I’ll be back in a sec, just wet myself laughing.

  14. Can you juggle? Can you juggle knives? Can you still juggle?
I’m a stark raving unco. Seriously, I was hit in the head by a discus in high school (it was the winning throw, in my defence). That’s why I play with words, not knives or discii.

  15. What are the most memorable nicknames you've had in your lifetime?
To most close buddies I’m Rae. It’s memorable to me, because even when I’m blind drunk I tend to remember that it refers to me.

  16. What was the first video game you fell in love with, on what machine? What is your favourite now?
Pacman on the Commodore 64. I’m really showing my age now. I was mad for it. My video game compulsion culminated with Bubble Bobble on the Playstation. I learnt my lesson the hard way, but I learned to let go, and I’ll never touch that shite again.

  17. What are your favourites? (Music, movies, books, anything!)
If I mention LOTR again you’re going to throw up, which won't do your computer any favours if you don't move fast enough. But I would like to clarify that I was into the books before the movie. Ah dear, there goes another good keyboard... The original three Star Warses are also high up there. And I don’t think I’ll ever grow out of Spaceballs… ‘ludicrous speed!! Go!!’ And any time I need a giggle, Zoolander comes out.

As for music, I tend to love anything that isn’t country and western, or too hardcore. Lately I’m listening to lots of Salmonella Dub (how much did they rock at the Big Day out??!!), Groove Armada, the Cat Empire, and right now I’m listening to Les Misrables.

Books… ahh that’s a hard one, because I love them a lot. I’ll consume everything from Anna Karenina to (bloody) Harry Potter. I also love anything to do with travel. I just read a cool book called ‘Catfish and Mandala’, about some crazy cat who cycles across Vietnam (no mean feat!).

  18. What DON'T you like about DVD?
The price. I’m an impoverished student. It’s new DVD’s or wine. Wine tends to win. It’s a cutthroat world, after all.

Rachel's recent reviews:

The Dreamlife of Angels
"A DVD best done justice by a rainy Sunday afternoon… entrancing, intriguing and beautifully moving."

The Bear
"The biggest, warmest, fuzziest bear hug you'll ever get from a shiny silver disc... "

Kurt & Courtney
"He: grunge god, defining a generation shaping musical movement. She: skanky ho-bag. This DVD: some deeply boring English git rabbiting on about them."

The Spanish Apartment
"Like being stuck in a broken down car with a bunch of funky, spunky Euro youngsters, it’d be loads of fun if were only going somewhere. "

Cosi
"Take a splash of Moulin Rouge, a dash of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and just a smidgeon of Play School on acid and you’ve got the general idea..."

Backbeat
"Vibrant, gritty, exciting and very real. Not only in the ridiculously well cast Beatles youngsters, but in the great capture of the era and vibe. You’ll feel like you’ve both been there and bought the T-shirt. "

Kalifornia
"Kalifornia offers kaptivating kharacter development, konsistent and kredible performances, and a killer klimax."

Rushmore (Remastered)
"A random concoction of fantastic oddball characters and portrayals - intriguing, rewarding and lots of fun... "
