Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill Live

Ever since Alanis burst onto the music scene in early 1996, she's been at the forefront of the female solo singer. Her music and lyrics are as in your face as you can get these days and yet still provide some of the most well know verses in music of late.

This dvd release is the same live recording of the current VHS release, confirmed by my cousin, a big Alanis fan. It's a different type of recording to what you would normally be used to, what I'm used to anyway. Come closer people, I need to explain this a little more.

Ok, normally when watching a live performance, you see the band on stage, audience in their seats and music blaring from everywhere. On this disc, you get that too, but not all the time. What you do get is a mix of live, unplugged, hidden camera and film footage throughout each song all spliced together as one song. You still with me?

Ok, let's try that again. As a song starts, Alanis may be singing an unplugged version on a TV show. Come the next chorus, we switch to her singing outside on the steps of someones porch, next chorus we go live to a huge concert, then back to an outdoor setting without losing the anything of the song itself. It's a feature where at times I think is cool and other times I think is distracting. I'll explain why below.

The quality here varies as we jump from scene to scene. At times we have good quality film and other times we have low resolution handy cam with bad lighting and no steady picture.

In all of this though the bit-rate is always high and I emphasise again as I always do in other reviews, what goes in, is what comes out. If you buy/rent this disc, don't confuse bad quality vhs camera footage with bad mpeg encoding. That's not the case.

In scenes where the source is of good quality, the disc shinces and you get to see some good detail. The aspect ratio is full screen for most of the show (about 98%) with a bit of widescreen thrown in for style. On the whole, a good transfer.

      Audio
    Contract

Mixed thoughts on the audio here, yet I still gave it a 8. :)

Basically, because the footage jumps from different footage, so does the audio to match and at times it gets annoying when you start getting into the song and you are thrown into a lulled version. But, on the flip side, some of the songs do the exact opposite in that they start with a soft version of the song and then BAM you are thrown into a full ear fest at the live version. That's where I like this style and only then.

You are given both a full surround dolby 5.1 mix on one side and a linear PCM mix on the other. I listened to the PCM track briefly with no DSP settings for surrounds enable just to get a stereo separation. It was a good sound mix, bar the scene jumping.

The 5.1 surround mix on the other hand wasn't as dramatic an increase as I thought it would be. The only time you get to really enjoy the surround experience is at concert venues or various live shows. A nice touch when you hear the soundfield open up from the front area to an encompassing arena.

A few production notes on this disc, nothing much else.

      Overall
    Contract

For Alanis fans, this is a great disc. I'm a fan myself and enjoyed the show but the editing gives you that overall 50/50 feel. Sometimes its cool, other times you can hear yourself scream out "Don't freaking change scenes so much".

In the end, it started to grow on me.
