*NSYNC - Live from Madison Square Garden

It is the summer of 2000, and boy band *NSYNC decide to hit the road with their “No Strings Attached World Tour.”

When first watching this DVD you would be forgiven for thinking that it was an MTV special about a bunch of screaming fans, who would give their left arm to be on stage with the pop band *NSYNC. Originally aired as a one hour HBO TV Special, *NSYNC Live From Madison Square Garden the DVD is approximately 90 minutes long. Naturally this means more singing, dancing, and costume changes than you can poke a stick at!

Before the beginning of the concert we are treated to a lovely MTV competition for fans to be on stage dancing with the group. MTV narrows down the competition by getting the ladies to show off their dance moves on stage. After the winners are chosen it is time for the countdown, and *NSYNC mania to begin. Kicking off the show with some funky movies and tunes, Justin, Lance, JC, Joey, and Chris will demonstrate what happens when you mix‘n’match your outfits. However, when the lights come on and the dance moves behind you can tell how much work has gone into this million-dollar tour (not to mention the expensive wardrobe). It is during the first song, No Strings Attached, that we find out an innovative way to remove a Velcro harness.

Once you have flown through the air on your harness, the trick is to pass it off as a dance move and also have four other band members doing the same thing, then you don’t look as stupid. From here on in you can tell what separates *NSYNC from those other ‘boy bands’. Granted they have all the makings of a typical boy band, but *NSYNC’s dance routines, stage presence and general tomfoolery differentiates them from the mould of other such ensembles. Throughout this concert I was greatly impressed by the *NSYNC lads, who have proven that you can both sing and dance simultaneously without miming. They also prove that more musical acts need to get a sense of humour towards themselves, and what they do for a living.

From classics like I Want You Back, which was recorded when Justin was only 14, to the ever popular Bye Bye Bye, the guys don’t seem to miss a beat as they casually breeze through 13 choreographed pop songs. Highlights of this DVD include Justin’s Beat Box, which is very impressive for those of us who have ever tried to make those beat box noises with our mouths. It also includes Just Got Paid, where after much anticipation the lucky winners of the ‘Dance on stage with *NSYNC* competition’ strut their stuff. Another delightful song on the DVD is This I Promise You which shows JC shifting the stage to get closer to the audience.

The video on this disc is superb. The colours are all great, the detail is sharp and grain isn't a major concern. MPEG artefacts don't exist, and film artefacts are very rare. Presented in full frame, the video is not widescreen enhanced but looks stunning all the same.

The audio on this disc is the big winner. Both the Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 soundtracks are great. Of course the 5.1 channel soundtrack is superior and contains some rather good surround channel use that really immerses you in the concert. The dialogue and vocals are all clear and there are no audio sync problems.

Overall this 90 minute non-stop dance-o-rama is great for any fans of the band. The “No Strings Attached World Tour” is a great tour/concert and a great DVD. Special features include a photo gallery, which in reality is a bunch of stills from the New York Live footage. But it is still worth it, this I promise you... hey, I had to get one *NSYNC pun in there!
