A film with characters; a film with character. That sums up As Good as it Gets. And the main character is the star of the show by a longshot. Melvin, played by Jack Nicholson, is an obsessive compulsive romance novelist who's antics include obsessing over the cleanliness of his hands yet his mouth is still the most foulest thing in his apartment block. Melvin doesn't speak to anyone yet verbally despises everyone. But all that changes when he is asked to look after his neighbours little dog while his owner is in hospital. From here, Melvin begins to soften and harden again and soften again yet still loving this dog that he once placed into a garbage chute. Sounds like a simple movie? It is, but its the performances that make the movie and the little side plots that thicken it as a whole.

This is one the best Columbia transfers I've, if not the best to date. Everything is perfect, perfect color saturation, perfect brightness, perfect sharpness etc etc etc. It is presented in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio with 16x9 enhancement so you will not be disappointed with the picture at all. I can't fault the transfer at all and would have to literally sit at the TV frame by frame before I could come up with a list of pointless faults. There is nothing more to say, this is a great looking disc.

This ain't a surround intensive movie, nor does it include exaggerated explosions and gun shots. It's a dialogue movie and dialogue is what you get, and CLEAR.
This script is chock full of classic lines from the master himself so whichever speaker he is belting out his lines in, that's about as directional as you're going to get. And he does belt out some beauties.
I wouldn't call this a subtle surround track but there is some noticeable ambience in certain scenes which is pretty much the limit of what you can expect.

This is a good disc. It has a great script and an excellent video transfer but that is the extent of what this dvd can offer. I'd only recommend buying this disc if you really enjoyed the movie. It is a 2 time academy award winner and for those of you who have yet to see it, rent it today, you won't be disappointed movie wise.
