One of the biggest selling artists in the UK or late has been David Gray. Who is he? This reviewer asked the same question up taking to reviewing this DVD and it soon dawned on him that he had found a male version of Tracy Chapman. Whether that is a good or bad thing in your eyes remains to be seen but the music and lyrics here are of exceptional and creative quality. The DVD features the sell out concert recorded live at The Point in Dublin toward the end of 1999. The 9000 fans packed into the concert ar having themselves a real good time, clapping along to his music, making it all the more enjoyable to watch. As stated within the blurb, this is a very intimate show featuring songs from all of his five albums, including hit singles Babylon and Please Forgive Me, both of which have grown on this reviewer the more he hears them.

Using a wide range of different equipment to film this concert, the images vary from excellent to old but that is all intentional as the recording instruments are used for effect and not because of budget. From some almost hi-def footage, lipstick cameras, 16mm film stock and standard video, we see images of exceptional quality to very grainy. In some instances, the image is so detailed that it even surprised this reviewer. The bit-rate meter sits in the high range all the way through so what we get here is a high quality transfer of an intentional looking recording, edge-enhancement in some instances aside. The audio accompanying the footage is your choice of Linear PCM stereo or 5.0 Dolby Digital which is interesting since the UK region 2 version has a 5.1 soundtrack, even if this DVD is region coded 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6. With the Stereo PCM track being the version of choice due to it's fidelity and the 5.0 track having a more audience participation presence in the surrounds. Included on this DVD is a 50 minute documentary "Up to a Point" detailing the lead up to his sell-out show at the Point in Dublin. Featuring various interviews along the way along with some accoustic performances that show Davids talent, this is an excellent accompanying video, albeit of semi decent quality at times. For fans of David Gray, and we're not sure if there are as many here locally as there would be in region 2, this DVD is an excellent piece of concert material that will see many plays in your player. For those of you who haven't heard of him, maybe a rental is in order to diversify your tastes.
