I Shot An Arrow Into The Air
Episode 15, January 15, 1960
The first manned rocket into space has crashlanded, killing 5 crewmen. The three survivors struggle to stay alive and discover where they are while one of them starts plotting his own survival at the expense of the others.

Death Ship
Episode 108, February 7, 1963
Landing on a distant planet, the crew discover a crashed duplicate of their own spaceship, complete with their dead bodies. Will they discover how and why it happened, or will the strange forces at work from the planet leave them stranded for ever?

Still Valley
Episode 76, November 24, 1961
A confederate soldier investigating a town invaded by the Yankees discovers an old man who gives him the power to win the war…but will he use it?

On a cold, dark Melbourne night, when all I want is to escape the nagging pain in the back of my neck and the dull throb behind the eyes from too many hours at work, it sometimes makes things worse worse having to turn on the television. The disturbing lack of imagination on show is just too draining to watch, with rubbish like Big Brother and Survivor polluting the airwaves. Don’t they realise? I don’t need no steenkin’ reality on television! I get enough reality during the day as it is. When I get home, I need make believe! All I can say is “Thank God for dvd and The Twilight Zone”. Amen.

The fullframe B/W image looks about as good as you can expect given the fact the series is 40 yeas old and filmed for television. With some minor variation in the quality of the picture from show to show, you can still generally expect a fairly good reproduction of the various sets and natural locations. Close-up shots reveal detail that you just don’t get from your old VHS copies of the show. The audio for the series is presented in Dolby Digital mono. With the exception of the slight hiss in the background of some shows and minor distortion (usually showing up in the oldest shows), I think it’s safe to say that it’s time to throw out those old video cassettes and wallow in the rejuvenated glory of the this dvd series.

The extra features on the dvd consist of a selection of text based screens. They contain a Rod Serling Biography, Season By Season Commentary, History Of The Twilight Zone and Reviews of the individual episodes on the disc. Sure, it’s not a comprehensive package, but there’s some good (but brief) reading, and the reviews are quite interesting.

Not the best dvd of the series, but still good, none-the-less. This dvd sees some remarkably hammy acting in Deathship and then some nicely restrained performances in Still Valley. Still, I’m a sucker for episodes with rocketship where the crew have to flip toggle switches, spin dials and look at rows of flashing lights to decipher what’s going on. It reminds me that it’s about time we saw some of the old B/W sci-fi movies on dvd, now that we’ve got The Twilight Zone to collect and stir the imagination a little. In the meantime, this dvd (and the rest of the series) will do just fine.
