Bruce Willis plays Walter Davis, brown nosing company man. When Walter needs a date for an upcoming company dinner with an important client his brother hooks him up with Nadia Gates (Kim Basinger) with the stern warning not to let her drink.

Of course, Walter ignores the warning and convinces Nadia to have a small drink. Chaos ensues as the normally shy Nadia becomes a rampaging extrovert, ruining the corporate dinner and getting Walter fired; hilarity ensues.

With his life in ruins Walter just wants to get rid of Nadia and move on, but her insanely jealous ex-boyfriend David Bedford (John Larroquette) and defence lawyer appears on the scene and threatens to kill Walter to stop him ‘drilling’ Nadia, as you would.

Bad turns to worse when Walter is thrown in jail and the only way he can avoid doing hard time is if David goes to bat for Walter, but he will only do it if Nadia will marry him. Nadia reluctantly agrees and Walter is acquitted, yay for the justice system!

I’m hesitant to provide an opinion on Blind Date. It’s a romantic comedy with some good character acting, a paper thin plot and a happy ending, enough said?

Video wise Blind Date is surprisingly good for a movie approaching its 20th anniversary and not having the benefit of a big budget digital re-master. A few film specs and flicks are noticeable in places and the picture can verge on soft at times but overall a decent transfer.

The most significant problem is the softening of facial features, mostly noticeable on close-up shots the actors all look like they’ve had a shot of Botox before every scene but this just adds to the novelty of seeing Bruce Willis after having a close encounter with a razor.

The audio presentation is best describes as adequate. The general sound is quite flat in places and the surrounds hardly get a show in. The subwoofer didn’t woof once.

Blind Date is primarily dialog driven and luckily, the dialog is mostly crystal clear and easy to pick up even when threatened by the infrequent foreground noise. The very 80’s musical soundtrack is fitting and sounds excellent, even without the benefit of a full 5.1 channel audio stream.

Another budget release with an equally budget set of extras consisting entirely of trailers for similar romantic comedies: Blind Date, Sleepless in Seattle, My Best Friends Wedding, As Good as it Gets and Jerry McGuire.

On the flip-side, a simply astounding number of subtitle options are available on this DVD with no less than 21 options including Bulgarian and Klingon; Ok, maybe not Klingon. The Dolby Surround 2.0 soundtrack is similarly available in a surprising number of options, English, German, French, Italian and Spanish. I love flicking between these different languages and hearing the voice acting they use to overdub actors like Willis, I’m easily amused. The menu system is widescreen enhanced, sans music and static but fitting with the budget release.

There’s really nothing outstanding about this release of Blind Date. As Bruce Willis’ first feature film it has a certain novelty value for his fans and it surely had a large part to play in his current fame.

Blind Date has some chuckle inducing moments but I’m not sure if it’s worth a purchase (even at the budget price), give it a rental for nostalgic reasons.
