American Pie was the first (and often considered the last!) good-quality teenage comedy to surface since the beginning of cinema (sounds very epic doesn’t it?). Its hilarious characters, no-holds-barred sexual situations and gross-out comedy sent it to the top of the box office within weeks – and secured itself a place in movie history! Just as light-sabers are synonymous with Star Wars films, warm apple pie is synonymous with American Pie.

Since its birth in 1999, American Pie has spawned two highly successful sequels, following the characters built in the original and maintaining their comedic value for the entire world to enjoy. Fans instantly warmed to these two sequels, delighted to see their favourites return for another run on the silver-screen. And here we are now, with a fully-featured box-set containing all three films in the American Pie trilogy, including a fantastic extra features disc packed to the brim with entertaining outtakes, featurettes and interviews.

Finally this genre-defining series gets the treatment it deserves on DVD. Fans will jump for joy at the arrival of these classic comedies in one box.

This bonus-features disc is split into five main sections, an FAQ, a discussion over dinner and an introduction from Eugene Levy (who plays Jim’s dad). All clips contain subtitles, and are in Dolby Digital 2.0. While the video quality is quite good, only menus are 16:9 enhanced. Owners of widescreen TVs will be a little disappointed.

The Recipe for Pie

Necessary Ingredients (1:54) – Introduction to this section of the disc, based around the hilarious cast and crew of the American Pie series.

The Guy Behind the Pie (8:09) – Interesting look at Adam Hurz (writer/producer), the front-man behind the Pie series. Not really your average screenwriter!

The Inspiration for East Great Falls (4:54) – The set of American Pie is actually based around a real place – East Great Rapids, a small American town. Hurz (writer) comments on where his characters came from – most are grounded in real people living in East Great Rapids (his hometown).

Casting the Gang (4:13) – A brief look at the original casting auditions, including audition tapes from most of the American Pie cast. Quite funny!

Jim’s Dad (8:16) – Jason Biggs and Eugene Levy take us through the development of Jim’s Dads character. Levy certainly plays the eccentric father superbly!

Add Note Cards and Stir (3:21) – Herz takes us through his method of screenwriting, using his ideas for American Wedding as an example. Great resource for aspiring screenwriters!

The First Piece – American Pie

The Baking of American Pie (5:43) – Our host Eugene Levy introduces this set of extra features based around the first of the American Pie series.

Sex Comedy in “Pie 1” – 6 brief featurettes outlining the ‘making-of’ a number of different sex-oriented scenes in Pie 1, including the famous apple pie scene! Very, very funny.

Bodily Functions in “Pie 1” – The ‘pale-ale’ and ‘shitbreak’ scenes are deconstructed by the cast and crew. Pretty damn revolting, but very entertaining.

Learning Lacrosse (2:56) – Chris Klein (plays Oz) had to learn to play lacrosse, and had a lot of fun doing it!

Tour of the Real “Pie House” (1:51) – The anonymous owner of Jim’s house gives a short guided tour of the kitchen. He seems to be quite proud to put his name to this famous house!

Dancing for Nadia (3:40) – An outtake of Jason Biggs struttin’ his stuff!

The Aftertaste – American Pie's Aftermath

Test Screening (2:16) – Producers and directors alike were seriously awestruck at how successful their test screening of American Pie was.

Fame! (4:06) – American Pie almost instantly became a cult-success. The cast share their experiences with crazed fans, as well as reminiscing on their experiences during production.

Backlash (1:52) – Critics share their disgust at American Pie.

The Second Helping – American Pie 2

“Making Pie 2” (3:05) – A few different cast and crew members share their anxieties behind making the sequel to the famous American Pie. A very brief ‘making of’ featurette.

The M.I.L.F. (4:11) – The very famous milf, Jennifer Coolidge, outlines her role as Stiffler’s mum. Quite entertaining!

Uneaten Pieces: The Lost Storylines – There were many small storylines that were lost either in the drafting or editing of American Pie 2. There are 8 of these ‘lost storylines’ (essentially deleted scenes) presented, sliced between interviews of the cast and crew.

Bodily Functions in “Pie 2” – Making-of the ‘peed-on’ and ‘superglue’ scenes.

Sex Comedy in “Pie 2” – 3 featurettes similar to those found in “the first piece” section of the DVD, including a deconstruction of the infamous lesbian scene. Easily the funniest section so far!

One Last Piece – American Wedding

Making American Wedding (6:16) – Standard ‘making-of’ for the third and final installment of the trilogy, American Wedding.

The First Read-Through (5:48) – A very funny initial read through by the cast is edited between the final scenes being rehearsed. This is very entertaining, but be warned as it contains a lot of swearing!

Sex Comedy in “Wedding” - Only one of these funny little featurettes is on offer here, as the ‘bachelor party’ scene is deconstructed on the American Wedding disc (as this bonus disc couldn’t fit it all in).

Bodily Functions in “Wedding” - The ‘grooming’ scene, and the ‘truffle’ scene are taken apart in these hilarious clips.

Tour of Jim’s Room (5:55) – Jason Biggs takes us on a guided tour of his bedroom set. Some interesting items, including a scented apple pie candle, make cameo appearances!

A Visit to the Prop Truck (3:57) – Dave and Scott (prop makers) takes us through the various props used on and around Jason Biggs’ crotch.

That’s a Wrap (4:52) – Nostalgic featurette reflecting on the damn good time everyone had creating the three American Pie films.

The Reunion Dinner (17:27)

Five years after the original cast/crew began production on American Pie they meet up for a dinner at a local restaurant. An interesting discussion between all the major players in all three films. It is divided up into various parts that are selectable via the menu, or as a whole. A worthwhile conclusion to a great DVD.

This disc offers over three hours of entertaining interviews, deleted scenes and ‘making-of’ featurettes. A very worthwhile addition to the trilogy set. Fans of the films will have a field day, and undoubtedly watch some of these extras over and over.
