The ABC TV series Gardening Australia has spawned this and a companion DVD. And gardening enthusiasts will love both of them.
If you don't have a garden, give it to your aunt. Here's a history of roses in Australia, with a guide to the most popular types (concentrating on David Austins and hybrid-teas), and practical advice on planting, fertilising, pest control and pruning. It's all told in a vernacular, down-to-earth style and even a garden-observer like me will find something of interest here.
Along with Roses, we get another made-for-video program, Open Garden, which looks at some of Australia's finest gardens, which have regular open-days for sticky-beaks. Tasmania and the Blue Mountains of New South Wales seem to boast the most fascinating gardens - some others are testaments to bad taste...
Right now. So there you have it... that's your lot.
The image is your basic television standard; nothing spectacular but certainly fine enough to provide great detail of some ravishing-looking blooms. And sound is just basic television stereo, but it does the job.
