A Reggae Session is in fact a straight reggae concert recorded in Fort Charles, Jamaica, in 1988. The concert has the very young (Ziggy Marley, son of Bob) and old (veteran ska and reggae artist Jimmy Cliff), and moves along at a lively clip.

There are some non-reggae ring-ins, including a not very credible Chrissie Hynde, Grace Jones and Carlos Santana, but the energy and enthusiasm of the real reggae artists and the charged-up audience makes up for those.

It seems a hot and sweaty night, the air charged with exotic fumes. Reggae has always been fired by exotic fumes, and there were lots of them around this night. It's a good representation of middle-period reggae, after its initial raw exuberance and before it started getting over-sampled to death. It would have been great to have been there...

It's a good quality transfer of a 4.3 ratio video, with vibrant colours and great atmosphere caught very accurately. There seems to be no digital restoration needed, and there's no sign of artificial edge enhancement or other techniques to 'improve' the picture.

The sound is basic, but plays loud without distortion - after all, reggae should be basic and loud! There's no need for extras on this DVD - this is a musical event which speaks for itself. I suppose the only shortcoming is its length - at just less than an hour, this could well have been packaged with another program to give full value to the DVD.

"Is it Worzel Gummidge? No, it's Jon Pertwee in his other great television role, as the good Doctor battling all kinds of evil on our behalf."
