Madonna - The Video Collection '93-'99

    Warner Vision/Warner Vision . R4 . COLOR . 67 mins . PG . PAL

A retrospective look at her work from 1993 onwards, this 4th madonna disc to be released from Warner Vision gives us 14 of madonna's better efforts at video clips. Here's the complete track listing for you all:

    1. 1993 - Bad Girl
    2. 1993 - Fever
    3. 1993 - Rain
    4. 1994 - Secret
    5. 1994 - Take a bow
    6. 1995 - Bedtime Story
    7. 1995 - Human Nature
    8. 1996 - Love don't live here anymore
    9. 1998 - Frozen
    10. 1998 - Ray of Light
    11. 1998 - Drowned world/ Substitute for Love
    12. 1998 - The Power of GOod-bye
    13. 1999 - Nothing really matters
    14. 1999 - Beautiful Stranger

There's nothing more to say about this disc other than to comment on the excellent video and audio presented. Another winner indeed.

A bit-rate of no less than 9 gives you the best quality mpeg coding possible and it shows. You immeadiately notice what dvd has to offer in comparison to your Rage or your Video-Hits transmissions with it's higher resolution. Everything looks so detailed in some scenes and gives the video clip the recognition it deserves as there are some excellent clips in here indeed.

In songs like "Bedtime Story" and "Beautiful Stranger" the high contrast images and the high levels of color saturation are a joy to look at and can sometimes leave your mouth gaping in awe. Then you move onto clips like "Ray of Light" and test the mpeg codec with the fast paced, almost strobing effect, imagery and all holds up very well indeed. An excellent looking disc I must say.

I would have given it a perfect 10 if the letterboxed clips were presented in an anamorphic format but that would have meant the full frame clips would have to have been modified to suit.

Linear PCM is the way to go for musical presentations. It is a must to achieve the kind of fidelity this disc presents. Although some of her music is artificial and synthesized, Madonna does use as much natural sounding instruments in these clips as she can and they sound awesome.

Of note is her Bedtime Story track where the bass does scare you at times if you're listening at reference levels and beyond. Don't try this at home kids unless you hate your neighbours or they live a kilometer away.

The menu system is nice and simple and the disc goes straight into the clips once the Warner Vision logo formalities are over.

I don't know if you could have added more to this disc other than use dual layers and double the amount of songs included.

The 4th madonna disc to be released by Warner Vision seems to be the best so far. It looks incredible and the sound is on par with the video.

Warner Vision, I don't know why you're bothering with VHS when product like this really puts it to shame.
