Bones are snapped, limbs are twisted, guns are fired, glares are glared and terrible puns are uttered in abundance in The Steven Seagal Collection 1988-1992, a box set featuring four of the sadistic one's best and most brutal flicks. Definitely superior to the follow-up box set (which is cursed with such dross as On Deadly Ground and Fire Down Below), this collection sees Seagal at his leanest and meanest, before he became a pudgy self-parody given to uttering trite Zen-lite philosophy as he despatched impossibly slow and moronic opponents whilst also preaching environmental awareness and (I swear to God) singing.

Under Siege is definitely the pick of the bunch, while at the other extreme Hard to Kill is hard to watch unless you're in a particularly undemanding mood.

The box set is presented in a nicely adorned fold-out cardboard package which suffers from being a fold-out cardboard package - that is, it's bound to get a little dog-eared and stained in the fullness of time. A cardboard sleeve containing four amaray cases would be preferable, but I guess it's no big deal. Not everybody is as clumsy and accident-prone as myself.

      REVIEW: Hard to Kill
"This is an action flick by the numbers; artlessly directed, joylessly performed and brain-numbingly scripted. It's no Under Siege. Hell, it's not even an Above the Law. "
      - Terry Oberg

      REVIEW: Nico: Above The Law
"Seagal is far less wooden in this decent action flick (his first) than he would become in his later films, even going so far as to smile on occasion (and not just at his latest burst of socket-wrenching). But he's still a sadistic fellow, make no mistake..."
      - Terry Oberg

      REVIEW: Under Siege
"Orson Welles had Citizen Kane. Krzysztof Kieslowski had Three Colours: Blue. Steven Spielberg has Schindler's List. And Steven Seagal has Under Siege, universally acknowledged as the pony-tailed one's best film by a country mile."
      - Terry Oberg

      REVIEW: Out For Justice
"One of the better Seagal movies as most of his earlier work is and I'm sure there are a few fans out there itching to add to their Seagal collection. "
      - Steve Koukoulas

There is literally not a SINGLE extra to be found amongst these four films. Boo!

Still, fare like this hardly demands feature length documentaries or extravagant behind-the-scenes breakdowns. It's all about the heroically inflicted sadism and the fortune cookie existentialism!

We'll finish with Steve's Zen musing for the day: if a hero standing in a forest shoots a villain three times in the chest, pummels his ribs into splinters, wrenches his left arm out of its socket and breaks his neck with an abrupt twist of the arms - but DOESN'T ram a machete into his eye - is the villain really dead?

Not in Steve's world. And that's why we love the big goof!

      The Sand Pebbles
"The Sand Pebbles is a captivating, if leisurely paced action film with some hilariously politically incorrect dialogue and some great performances, particularly from the legendary Steve McQueen. "

The X-Files Season 5 Box Set
"The fifth X-Files box set is comprised of 20 of the series' best and most confident episodes, a great set of extras and decent sound and vision. "

      Tarzan & Jane
"Tarzan and Jane is a decent follow-up to the much-loved original, and is well worth at least a rental to keep the youngsters entertained for a few hours."

      Babylon 5 - Season 1
"Nerds of the world rejoice, for our quavering voices have finally been heard - the first DVD box set of Babylon 5 is here, full of enough geeky goodness to gobsmack us for hours and drive our girlfriends/boyfriends (those few of us who have 'em) utterly insane..."

Sitting Ducks Volume 1 - Duck Cravings
"...a decent DVD of a sweetly amusing animated series that the kids will gobble up, but don't expect the crossover appeal of a Shrek or a Toy Story."
