To my mind, there are only two totally indispensable Marilyn Monroe movies, which should be part of every collection. They are Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Some Like it Hot.

This collection, while not having the former, has the latter. And as all serious cinema enthusiasts know, Some Like it Hot is one of the greatest comedies master director-writer Billy Wilder ever crafted, right up there with his early masterpiece, The Major and the Minor. It is obligatory viewing for anyone serious about comedy.

This set also has River of No Return, which teams Marilyn with the brooding, husky Robert Mitchum in a very silly but amazingly appealing Western action movie with Monroe as a bar-room singer with a heart of gold (hmmmmm, I think she played that role more than once!). This is one of my very favourite Monroe movies, but anyone else should sample before buying!

Bus Stop and Let's Make Love have their moments of appeal, but are definitely just making up the volume here.

Apart from Some Like it Hot, which has two special documentaries, the discs are pretty threadbare. They all feature good anamorphic transfers, but the only 'bonus' on the other three discs is a trailer for the movie.

The star attraction of this set, Some Like it Hot, can be purchased separately. The other titles can only be found as part of this collection. Unless you're a Monroe-fanatic, I'd recommend buying Some Like it Hot and renting the other titles. I've got a personal liking for the very hokey River of No Return, but I'm prepared to accept that I may be a bit odd there...
