Spanning a career of over 50 years and over 30 million album sales, this crooner from New York is still to this day performing over 200 shows a year. Known as 'The King Of Cool', he was born Anthony Bennedetto in Queens, New York and was given the name Tony Bennett by Bob Hope in 1949 after seeing him perform in a club. His biggest hit and signature tune is I Left My Heart In San Francisco, stated as being the second highest selling record after Bing Crosby’s White Christmas. A master in the art of intimate singing, having taken the baton from Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong before him, Bennett has simply never changed his style for popularity's sake. Also renowned for his support of equal rights, having marched alongside Martin Luther King and for his love of painting, this legend has it all. Tony Bennett’s New York is as the title states, the story of both the man and the city. The documentary sections, which seperate songs, detail not only the history of Tony Bennett but also cover the history of the US and that of American music. From his early childhood to the depression to his rebirth to a new, younger generation, commonly referred to as the MTV audience. Extensive archival footage is used to great effect throughout along with interviews with family and show business friends. Concert footage used was filmed at Ceasar’s in Atlantic City at yet another sell-out concert. Running for 85:51, this documentary/concert is both informative and entertaining, not just to fans of Tony Bennett but to music lovers alike. Track listing:

At 75, Tony Bennett shows no sign of slowing down and for that we are truly thankful. Already booked to tour throughout 2003, he seems content to still be doing what he always has, performing to an adoring audience. Recently releasing the album Playin’ With My Friends, Bennett Sings The Blues, this legend of American music just seems to get stronger every day. A must have DVD for fans of Tony Bennett and definately worth a look for anyone else with a passing interest.

Presented in full frame and not 16x9 enhanced, the video transfer for the concert footage is extremely good. Blacks are great, as is shadow detail. Colours are good with little over-saturation and concert lighting is used very well. Aliasing is virtually invisible and there are no noticeable artefacts, in all a very clean transfer. The documentary footage is also very good overall. A considerable amount of the footage used is from the 1920s to 1960s and therefore it is not expected to be great. What they have used is great material and has transferred well. Audio supplied is Dolby Digital 2.0 and it does the job nicely. Audio sync is no problem and all sounds are clear. There's very little in the way of extras on this one, there is an option to play songs randomly or to select scenes or individual tracks. Apart from that there is the standard advertisement for other releases and that is all folks.
