100 Girls

All the ingredients for a sexy new teen comedy are here in this one. We’ve got the catchy but simple, limited-syllable movie title, bucket loads of sexual references, blatant nudity even when not really required, more sexual references, several drop dead sexy female characters to amuse the male lead, some more sexual references, plenty of laughs, a menacing nemesis, and so many more sexual references that its simply impossible to keep count. When you mix all these ingredients together, and throw in a surprisingly sweet and sensitive, fresh faced lead male character then you’ve got yourselves a winning mature-teen comedy… well almost.

100 Girls is based in a typical American college setting where study and exams are not spoken of. In most other college movies these elements are replaced by either heavy drinking or the chase for sex, sometimes both, but in 100 Girls we’re seeing a brand new breed of modern man. That’s right ladies, this is a teen college movie that even you can appreciate, especially if you relish corny love stories. Matthew is the typical college freshman, dopey looking with virtually no previous success with the ladies. This is until one night during an over-extended power blackout when he finds himself stuck in a dormitory elevator with a girl he never actually gets to see (remember, it’s a blackout – thus no lights). They talk, chat, and eventually get it on, but the caring Matthew wakes up in the morning to find out that his new found love has left him with nothing but a pair of her underwear.

Unlike almost all other teen/college comedies, our lead character Matthew is not after hot furious sex, he is however after his one true love, the girl of his dreams. Who cares if they had sex without ever actually seeing each other, this was obviously love and Matt uses all his cerebral powers to chase down this girl of his dreams and find out who she is. The easy part of his plan is that he knows where she lives. The hard part is that she lives in an all girls dormitory filled with 100 hot female bodies. There is obviously a lot of hilarity to be had with a storyline as above, especially when we are introduced to a wide range of clichéd female characters. For something different, though, 100 Girls attempts to show us an all new side to the typical clichéd girls we usually see in films like this. The competitive tomboy has a softer side, the gorgeous goddess isn’t as superficial as she seems, and the ugly geek girl is actually beautiful on the inside and out. Sounds corny doesn’t it? Well trust me, it is! While some people will find the corniness just far too much to bear (for example there is the over-used pillow fight scene which includes many more feathers than could possibly be in just two pillows), putting all corn aside it is a very amusing film, especially if you can stomach the often vulgar humour.

"I'll clean the toilet every week. I'll do it with my tongue if you ask. I will strike the words "hooters" and "love rockets" from my vocabulary. I'll love you. Even if your name is Mimi and you want me to pronounce it May-May."

The only gripe comes from Matthew being annoyingly over-sensitive at times, his final speech is a little soppy and sounds far too much like a feminist's wet dream. However, it is pretty hard not to like the chump and I was sincerely interested and curious to see how the film would end and who his dream girl actually was. If you can stomach vulgar humour, and a corny love story then you’ll just have to love 100 Girls. Just when you thought nothing new could be done with the mature-teen genre, Michael Davis manages to pull out an absolute gem of a movie.

  Video
Contract

The video quality is surprisingly clean for a local, low budget DVD release. The aspect ratio is 1.85:1, but lacks widescreen enhancement. With this in mind the picture is rather sharp and the colours are vibrant and well rendered. Shadow detail is not a problem and nor is aliasing. Film artefacts are present, but aren’t frequent enough to distress even the toughest critic. The disc is single layered and contains no subtitles.

  Audio
Contract

The audio is also of a very high standard, which is important considering the heavy dialogue in the film. There are Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtracks on this disc and both are well rendered with no audio synch problems. The dialogue is always clear and the surrounds get a good work out. 100 Girls is a dialogue heavy film and as such the subwoofer doesn’t get much of a work out, except for the few more excited scenes. Overall it is very impressive.

  Extras
Contract

Another local release sans extras, unless of course you want to include scene selection and animated menus? No, I didn't think so...

  Overall
Contract

If you love teen/college comedies then 100 Girls will be right up your alley, offering the usual array of ‘dumb’ humour but now with more love than lust. If you believe that sensitive new age guys really are out there then you’ll instantly fall head-over-heels for Matthew and will have an absolute ball watching this film. Overall 100 Girls manages to cover all bases, so if you can enjoy the endless sexual references then this film will be a great choice, especially considering its low retail price.
