In 1978, Richard Donner proved to us that we could believe a man could fly. For decades fans would read the comics and enjoy the exploits of the George Reeves TV series, thankfully not camped up like that of Batman. So Donner's masterpiece would bring Superman to the big screen in a beautifully epic nature with grand score, wide open landscapes and vistas, a bustling Metropolis and a villian like no other. This movie had me hooked on the big screen addiction, not Star Wars given that I hadn't seen it at all during its initial theatrical run. Superman would forever change my outlook on life. Given that Richard Donner was hired to film two Superman movies, and with the success of the first, it was inevitable that a sequel would be released just some years after the original. Well, truth be told, the first two were to be shot back to back more as a two-part story, but with the deadline for the first movie looming closer and closer it was rushed and edited for a quick release. It succeeded beyond everyone's expectations and so Donner was to continue on his task to comeplete the rest of his vision with what was to be some 80% of Superman II already shot. Alas, it was not to be and for some reason that can only be described as the Salkinds (producers) flexing their muscle, Donner was replaced by Richard Lester who went on to complete Superman II and actually reshot more than half of the movie altogether.

While the US box set release housed all four Superman movies, we are only privvy to the first two. The reason behind this discrepancy is because Warner Bros don't actually own the rights to the third and fourth installments, the Salkinds still do. Outside of the marvellous collection of extras on the first disc and the theatrical trailer on the second, nothing else is to be found in this collection other than a nice little red box enclosure featuring a bevelled Superman insignia on the front. For fans of the series, this is the box set to get hold of that looks much better than buying them individually. Get your copies now for fans of both cinema, comics and Superman.
